Apple shows off the iPhone’s ARKit in action with The Machines

After describing the recently unveiled iPhone 8 as the first smartphone designed for AR, Apple demonstrated exactly how its ARKit and Metal 2 API can open the door for developers looking to build an AR game for iOS.

Apple says the next generation of iDevices have been custom tuned for AR, with cameras, gyroscopes, and accelerometers created to handle motion tracking, even in low-light.

Google launches ARCore augmented reality SDK

Google has launched a new devkit called ARCore to help budding creators start making augmented reality experiences of their own.

In a nutshell, ARCore is a platform for building augmented reality apps on Android. It uses three key technologies to integrate virtual content with the real world — as seen though your smartphone camera.

Big Immersive to become dedicated VR and AR publisher

Big Immersive has formally announced its arrival to the games industry, and spelled out its desire to become a dedicated VR and AR publisher.

The company was established in November 2016, and has already published three titles: Agelore’s FantasyCity Traffic Control VR, and Love Cubed VR. Despite being active for almost a year, the firm had been flying under the radar until now.

EA CEO: We can and will do VR, but ‘AR is more interesting’

During a conference call with investors today Electronic Arts chief Andrew Wilson spoke to the state of the company’s virtual- and augmented-reality endeavors, which have so far amounted to producing a brief VR scenario for its 2015 release Star Wars Battlefront.

Notably, Wilson stated that while EA’s Frostbite engine is capable of doing VR and the company is looking at making more VR games, it sees the VR market as being something of a slow burn.

iOS tool ARKit lights a creative spARk in creators

Apple has introduced the new tool ARKit which will be launching officially with iOS 11 in the fall. ARKit creates an augmented reality experience using visual intertial odometry (VIO) to track the world in conjunction with camera sensor and core motion data.

With ARKit, iOS 11 devices can analyze the environment within camera view and detects horizontal planes in the area (like tables or floors) and can track and place objects on smaller feature points as well.

AR game restrictions ruled unconstitutional by district judge

A Wisconsin ordinance decreeing that augmented reality developers must get special permits if their apps encourage play in county parks has been ruled unconstitutional by a district judge.

It’s a notable decision that could affect how augmented reality game devs operate and design games in the long-term.

VR/AR tracking dev Leap Motion secures $50M investment

 

Leap Motion, the company best known for its suite of hardware and software for tracking hand movement in virtual spaces, has closed out a round of Series C funding and obtained an additional $50 million in the process.
