Tell us about yourself and your work in VR/AR/MR.

We are a full-service game development company, which specializes in innovative, interactive experiences. Founded in 2002 by Jesse Schell, we are one of the largest independent game studios in the US at about 110 full time on site developers. Our expertise ranges from augmented reality, and virtual reality games to interactive installations and theme park attractions and we have developed experiences for partners such as Google, Lego, Facebook, Universal, Disney, and so on.

What excites you most about VR/AR/MR?

It’s funny to think about, but when this new wave of VR excitement rolled in on the back of the Oculus Kickstarter, we looked around and realized that our studio had some of the deepest AR and VR knowledge in the industry. Before starting Schell Games, Jesse was the former Creative Director of Disney’s VR theme park (Disney Quest). Coupled with the fact that about 40% of our team were graduates of CMU’s Entertainment Technology Program (who dealt heavily in VR and AR for the past decade and a half) we realized we could have a lot of fun in this space. So really what excites me most is seeing the amazing things our team continues to develop day after day, these technologies allow for such amazing experiences in the right hands, and it’s simply a joy to get to be a part of that.

Can you tell us about projects that you are currently working on or are planning?

I wish I could! Almost all of our AR and VR  partnership projects are top secret – but find me in person, and we might be able to chat more. I can say we have products in development on almost every VR and AR platform right now; there is no shortage of places to go.

Who would you like to meet at VRDC Fall 2017?

If you love chatting about creating immersive experiences, what is working and failing with AR and VR these days, and where things are trending we should sync up. And of course, if you are looking for a studio to help take a concept to a shipped experience, we are happy to chat about how Schell Games can help!
